Empowering the Minds of Secondary School Students against the use of ilicit Substances

The strength of any nation lies in the health, values, and productivity of its youth. When the quality of life of young people is undermined, the future of the nation itself is at risk. Recognizing this global threat, governments worldwide have taken bold steps against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. Yet, the crisis persists and Nigeria is no exception.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC, 2022), an alarming 14.4% of Nigerians aged 15–65 about 14.3 million people, are involved in drug abuse.

This epidemic has devastating consequences on education, security, family life, and national development. In line with our commitment to youth empowerment and preventive health, Mobilization Towards Leadership for Women and Youth Development Initiative (MOLDEV) is taking proactive steps to confront this challenge. To mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, we are launching a Drug Awareness and Youth Education Campaign targeting teenagers aged 13–19 years. Through community outreach, school-based sensitization, and peer education programs, we aim to: • Raise awareness on the dangers of drug abuse and illicit trafficking. • Equip young people with the knowledge and resilience to resist peer pressure. • Promote healthy lifestyles and leadership values that strengthen families and communities. With donor support, we can expand this initiative to reach more schools and communities, empowering a new generation to break free from drug vices and contribute to building a healthier, safer, and more productive Nigeria — and indeed, a better world.
