Climate change is causing harmful social, economic, and health impacts on vulnerable communities that have contributed the least to the climate crisis. We seek to explores the disproportionate impact of climate change on marginalized communities and advocates for equitable solutions and to also ensure that policies on climate action remain consistent with existing human rights laws, obligations, standards, and principles.
We strive to create awareness and stakeholders inclusion in the implementation of climate laws as its affects the vulnerable population.
The effects of climate change on vulnerable communities include:
a. Heat Illnesses: Climate change can result to increase in heatwaves, in an accumulative scale, frequency, and intensity which result in heat stress and heat-related deaths, especially among vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions.
b. Respiratory Illnesses: Climate change can worsen respiratory issues like asthma due to increased air pollution, heat stress, and extreme weather conditions.
c. Water Related Illnesses: Changes in temperature and precipitation patterns can contaminate water sources, leading to waterborne diseases. Flooding can also spread waterborne pathogens, posing health risks, especially for communities with inadequate water and sanitation infrastructure.
d. Food System Impacts: Climate change affects food availability, quality, and diversity, exacerbating food and nutrition crises. This can lead to undernutrition, particularly in vulnerable communities with limited access to nutritious food.
e. Insect Related Diseases: Climate change alters the distribution and prevalence of disease-carrying insects like mosquitoes, increasing the risk of vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and Zika virus.
f. Mental Health Effects: A lot of mental health issues, such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and depression, particularly among communities experiencing displacement, loss of livelihoods, and social cohesion disruptions can be caused by climate change.
